A representative waterfall on the Hida Kosaka Waterfall Tour
Hida Kosaka is dotted with over 200 waterfalls, but we will introduce the ones that are particularly worth visiting, divided into "easily accessible waterfalls" and "famous waterfalls upstream."
Easy-to-access waterfalls (for beginners and tourists)
Gandatekyo Gorge
Formed by the eruption of Mount Ontake, this gigantic columnar jointed cliff is 72 meters high and 120 meters wide. A walking trail is maintained at the base of Iwadate, where you can enjoy the impressive Iwadate Falls up close. There is also a visitor center, making it a convenient spot for sightseeing in terms of both access and facilities.
Shiraito Falls
A beautiful waterfall with thin, delicate streams of water cascading like threads. Accessible on foot from Ganritsu Gorge, it is a hidden gem with relatively few tourists, allowing you to enjoy nature in peace. The time when sunlight filters through the trees makes for a great photo opportunity.
Akagane Toyo
This small waterfall is located on a tributary of the Kosaka River, but is nicknamed "Akagane" (Red Gold) because the water shines copper-colored. It is very easy to access and can be easily visited as part of a walking route from Ganritsu Gorge.
Famous waterfalls in the upper reaches (for advanced climbers)
Neo Falls
This famous waterfall, with a drop of 63m, has been selected as one of Japan's 100 best waterfalls. The sheer volume of water cascading down and the sheer force of the waterfall are overwhelming, and the impressive sight awaits at the end of the physically demanding hiking route. The hiking trail is well maintained, but there are some slippery sections, so hiking boots are essential.
Sennin Falls
As its name suggests, this waterfall is a fantastical space that seems to be home to a hermit. The contrast between the large amount of water and the moss-covered rock surface is beautiful, making it a place you'll want to visit especially during the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves. The route is slightly shorter than Neo Falls, but it's one you'll want to take on with plenty of stamina.
Access information and travel times
- It takes 10 to 20 minutes by car from Hida-Osaka Station on the JR Takayama Main Line to each trailhead and visitor center.
- It is not possible to walk from the station, so we recommend renting a car or taking a taxi.
- It takes about half a day to a full day to enjoy the entire waterfall tour.
Important points to note about clothing and belongings
- Non-slip hiking boots and trekking shoes
- Waterproof jacket (for sudden rain or waterfall splashes)
- Drinking water and snacks
- Smartphone and camera (waterproof case recommended)
- Don't forget to bring insect repellent in the summer and warm clothing in the winter
Nearby stopover spots
- Nigorigo Onsen:This secret hot spring springs from an altitude of 1,800 meters, and its appeal lies in its open-air bath with a spectacular view of Mount Ontake.
- Ganritsukyo Himeshaganoyu:This natural carbonated hot spring is located right next to Ganritsu Gorge and is a great place to stop by after sightseeing.
- Gero Hot Springs:One of Japan's three most famous hot springs, this is a classic hot spring town where you can soothe your fatigue after touring the waterfalls.
